Slow Cooker Simple Syrup

Super simple, it does all the work whilst you do anything else.

If I am 100% honest this was actually a mistake. It was meant to be marmalade but silly old me put way too much water in the slow cooker.

However not wanting to waste any food, I was able to save it. Creating a bitter marmalade and a simple syrup.

For this recipe weigh out your oranges as you will need double the weigh of sugar.

This recipe gave me 2 large bottles of syrup and 2 jam jars full of marmalade.

Equipment;

Slow cooker

Chopping Board

Knife

Blender

Funnel

Large Jug

Jam Jars or Air tight containers

Into the cooker;

5 Large oranges - juiced and seeds removed

Double the amount of sugar

1.8 L of almost boiling water

Juice of 1 Lemon

To begin juice the lemon and oranges, removing all the seeds. Thinly slice the orange peel, and place it in the cooker.

Save the orange juice for a drink or a chilli.

Pour in the lemon juice and sugar. Give it a good mix, then pour over the water.

BE CAREFUL

Turn the slow cooker onto low for 8 hours or high for 5 hours. Giving it a stir every hour or so.

Once the time has pasted, using any type of straining equipment, slotted spoon sieve etc. Remove all the orange peel and place into a blender with a small amount of the liquid. I used around 2 tbsp.

Now moving back to the liquid that is left, carefully pour this into a large jug to make it easier to move it into the bottles. You could place a sieve over the jug to catch any bits you may have missed.

Once slightly cooler, using the funnel carefully pour the syrup into the bottles and allow to cool completely before closing the lids.

Both parts of this recipe can be used for many different things.

Syrup;

Cocktails

Butter Cream

Coffee

Chillis

Ice cream

Marmalade;

Orange Sponge

Cheese and Crackers spread

Buttercream frosting
