The Palfrey - Derby

A hidden gem.

After being in this establishment for drinks I really wanted to see what It would be like for food, and with my partner missing his fathers birthday due to work commitments this was the perfect place as they also had many Gluten Free options for his fathers wife. Double win.

The weather was absolutely awful, so the comforting warmth of the palfrey was lovely. The staff were just as friendly as ever too.

Whilst waiting for our booked slot, we enjoyed a few drinks. I went for the a rum based cocktail called Dragons Breath, this drink was way to easy to finish. Unfortunately I can not find the ingredients for this cocktail as their menu changes regularly. Also it was 2 for £10 cocktails so that was a little bonus.

Dragons' Breath

Moving on or should I say up as we were guided to our seats, the reservation places were made from scrabble letters, which was a lovely little touch.

Once had all decided on what to eat, the lovely waiter bought us an unexpected amuse bouche which was a super crispy lamb bonbon with celeriac puree. Incredible texture flavour which set the mood for the rest of the dishes to come. We all agreed to share some artisan bread and oils with parsley butter and a hazelnut crumb rather than having full sized starters. The bread was beautifully soft and the oil were rich, which worked very well priced at £3.95.

For mains we all had something different, so I'll just focus on my dish which was a very fulfilling Duck breast served alongside braised red cabbage, seed cracker, new potato hash, pickled blackberries and blackberry jus. This was a large portion but you would expect that for the price of £21.95.A side of seasonal vegetables would cost a little more however in my opinion you do not ned to get them unless you are extremely hungry. The pickled blackberries gave a sharpness to the dish which balanced and cut through the richness of the duck. Overall the dish was well textured and fantastic.

To finish I had a Cranachan, which is a Scottish dessert. This particular one was with local Derbyshire honey, foraged wild berries, heavy cream, whiskey and oats. I have to be honest I chose this mostly for the whiskey. I am not a huge fan of cream unless it is accompanied well enough with other item. If I am brutally truthfully this was too heavy, now this could be due to my main I am unsure, but three of us at the table had this dessert and only one finished . It was still fantastically flavoured and I was able to tell it had been freshly prepared as the berries were still fresh and crisp. All of their desserts are £6.50 unless otherwise stated.

In conclusion, I do recommend this place especially if you have any special dietary requirements. Even if you do not fancy eating here please go for drinks, they are fantastic. The staff are fantastic, the décor is fantastic. If you can not tell I actually lovely the palfrey.
