The Wonky Table - Derby

A rustic spot inside the busy city.

I wanted to give this place another ago as I haven't been in quite a few years and my gosh has it changed for the better! The staff are lovely, the décor is fun yet not busy and the atmosphere is comforting but lively.

We made a last minute booking, like 2 hours before our tabled was booked. The staff on the phone were so friendly which followed when we arrived as we were greeted warmly, myself and my partner, were seated quickly.

After choosing to have a bottle of crisp white wine, from South Africa, which unfortunately the name escapes me, we slowly chose our food. This took us so long as every item sounded incredible!

Below I'll talk about the meat options together and the vegan options together. The mains came with seasonal vegetables chosen by the Chef.

Jack chose to have the braised bee croquettes with horseradish mayo and Asian slaw for £6.95 (image 1) the portion was good. Our thoughts were the beef was slightly dry when first bitten into however that soon changed as the beef was actually extremely moist. We thought this could be down to them being fried and dried.

For his main he had Feta and red pepper stuffed chicken breast with chipotle and honey glazed chicken wings accompanied by mango slaw for £14.95. Again the portion size was perfect! The different flavour combinations worked so well within this dish as the mango slaw gave sweetness to cut through the saltiness of the feta whilst the honey heightened the chipotle. It was a well though dish and a bonus point for using multiple parts of the chicken.

Continuing on, I wasn't really in the mood for a meat dish that night and once I saw the vegan options I was sold.

To start I had the soup of the day (Image 1)which happened to be one of my new favourites, Spicy sweetcorn! It was served with beautifully soft bread for £4.95 you were given a huge portion. Honestly keep an eye out as I will most definitely be trying to recreate this.

For the main (Image 2) I was treated to a beautifully textured tamarind and treacle jackfruit in a temper batter with coconut mint yoghurt as well as green beans and asparagus. It was incredible £11.95 well spent! I had never heard of tamarind before and after a like research it is a seed pod from the tamarind tree used extensively in South-East Asia and Indian cooking, it has a sweet and sour flavouring*. The flavour pairings were spot on with this dish. Now I do not like coconut 99% of the time, this however completely changed my view on coconut, this was silky and balanced the mint well.

For this visit neither myself or Jack really wanted any desserts, they all sounded delicious it's just we were already so full!

Overall I highly recommend checking out The wonky table, they other a lot for everyone! Every first Wednesday of the month they have a vegan/Vegetarian night, occasionally they have Gluten Free nights. As well as this they offer a Lunch and early evening menu. So if you're looking for somewhere for date night this is the perfect place!
